Limitless expression

Just when you thought the Creative Industries bar had been set, another graduation show comes along to raise it further.  And not just raise it, but dip it in swiss chocolate, varnish it and cover it with Christmas lights.

The Visual Art and Craft and Jewellery Design graduation shows have completely transformed Central’s buildings at 12 Aberdeen Street into one mammoth gallery.  Freshly painted white walls drawing all the focus to the creative displays spreading across several rooms.

Central Art Curator Judith Hugo noticed a shift in media this year.

“There has been a resurgence in ceramic work and an equal interest in textiles.  There is not so much straight painting this time”, she said.

“There has been a lot of experimentation with organic materials eg. Sharleen King’s work which includes a botanical encyclopaedia that has been boiled with plant material between pages and her work ‘On the breeze’ which utilises filter coffeepapers.

“The jewellery work also reflects this trend with the use of unique plinths and mixing of the precious with the non-precious by placing the pieces on varied wooden blocks”, said Judith.

On the launch night, Central was fortunate to have a leading patron of the arts in Australia, Janet Holmes à Court, present to distribute the various prizes which are listed in full at the foot of the article.
